As a child, I read Beverly Cleary’s books over and over and over again. I couldn’t get enough of Ramona, Beezus, Henry Huggins and Ralph S. Mouse.
Cleary’s books reflect childhood wonderfully – a simple childhood, with simple problems, like what are the real words to the national anthem? How will I get this dog home when dog’s aren’t allowed on the bus? How can I get along with my annoying sister?
My children have enjoyed Cleary’s books too. Most of them are perfect for fairly new readers – not too long to be discouraging, with pictures, relatively short words and short chapters. If your child is bored with easy readers, he is ready for Cleary’s books.
Because so many people have enjoyed them, you will be able to find audiobooks of most (if not all) of Cleary’s books. If your child struggles to read, have her read the book along with the narrator to strengthen her skills.
Recommended for ages 6 and up, depending on reading ability.
