Virginia Lee Burton

There are some authors that no matter what book you pick up, you will be sure to enjoy it.  Virginia Lee Burton is one of those authors.

Virginia Lee Burton (1909 – 1968) wrote and illustrated several classic picture books – including The Little House, Katy and the Big Snow, Maybelle the Cable Car, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, among others.

My children and I have enjoyed every one of Burton’s books that we’ve picked up and read.  Her characters tend to be buildings or machines, which is fun for children’s imaginations.  Her illustrations are lively and fun to study while reading the books, and the pace of her books is easy for young children to follow.

I’d recommend reading any, or all, of Burton’s books to your children – and collecting them all for your personal library.  These are classic stories which have already withstood the test of time and are worth reading again and again.

Recommended for ages 3 to 8.
