When my kids were little, some of the books we read over and over and over again were Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter books.
Little Critter is a… well… critter who finds growing up hard at times. He tries his best, but makes mistakes. He learns to love his little sister in The New Baby. He has trouble going to bed in Just Go to Bed. He enjoys some hilariously funny one-on-one time with the adults in his life in Just Grandma and Me, Just Grandpa and Me, Just Me and My Dad, Just Me and My Mom.
But the favorites of my kids were the board books Fireman Critter, Cowboy Critter and the like, where Little Critter pretends what he wants to be when he grows up. We read those over and over and over again – laughing every time at the dilemmas into which Little Critter managed to get himself.
These picture books are great for children up to middle elementary school. But even my 6th-grader enjoys reading these books after her younger siblings have read them. I know because I caught her reading them under her covers.
