Mercy Watson

Kate DiCamillo, author of Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tale of Despereaux, brings her skill and humor to beginning readers in her Mercy Watson books.

My first introduction to Mercy Watson was by CD – when my daughter checked out the first two books on CD and we listened to them together in the car.  We laughed out loud at the antics of this pig who is treated as a child by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Watson.  Mercy unexpectedly finds herself in many crazy situations because of her love of treats – especially toast, with lots of butter.

The Lincoln sisters, who live next door, add to the humor.  Eugenia does not approve of pigs at all, especially pigs who love toast, while Baby loves Mercy.  And somehow, in each book, everyone involved in the story ends up in the Watson’s kitchen feasting on heavily buttered toast, much to Mercy’s delight.

My beginning readers loved to read these short chapter books, especially while listening to the CD.  (A great way to help increase their reading fluency.)  I love reading these books with them; I’m always interested to see what that crazy pig is going to do next!
