Elephant and Piggie

Children just beginning to read will greatly enjoy reading any Elephant and Piggie book by Mo Willems – and better yet, their parents will enjoy listening to them!

Mo Willems has a great sense of humor, which comes out in all his books. I reviews his Pigeon books earlier, but felt that the Elephant and Piggie books needed their own special review.

The elephant, names Gerald, is best friends with Piggie, named Piggie. Together they do all sorts of things, like hang out, play with Piggie’s new toy and play a trumpet.

Each page includes very few words and simple, but effective, illustrations – enough to enhance and advance the story, but not distract, which is great for parents who’ve tried to keep a reader focused on reading and not inspecting illustrations.

Elephant and Piggie books certainly raise the bar for beginning reader books – a far cry from the simple, repetitive Dick & Jane books from my childhood.

Recommended for beginning readers, ages 4 to 8.
