Nikki McClure has a gift for making wonderful picture books for infants, toddlers & preschoolers. How to Be a Cat is her newest book, and I highly recommend it.
Like Apple, which I reviewed here, How to Be a Cat is deceptively simple. Black-and-white paper cutouts illustrate the book, with pops of color on each page – this time in baby blue. Each two-page spread contains a single word – an action word (aka verb) – which describes what a cat does.
The illustrations show that action. For infants, the simple words and pictures will keep them interested. Readers can engage toddlers and preschoolers in more discussion about each picture, and then children can enjoy the books themselves without feeling like they’re missing out on the story.
Highly recommended for ages infant – 5.
