Disclaimer: I do not like monsters. I do not like horror, vampires, gore or Halloween.
Which is why I am surprised that I’m actually writing about a book with monsters and vampires. But know plenty of people love Halloween and all that accompanies the holiday, so when I found this book, I thought I’d include it for those of you who do enjoy such things.
First, in order to really enjoy Frankenstein by Ludworst Bemonster, you need to be very familiar with one of my favorite picture books, Madeleine by Ludwig Bemelmans. If you’ve never read Madeleine, then read it first before you read Frankenstein – otherwise the funniness of this story will be lost on you.
Because Frankenstein is a parody of Madeleine. It follows Madeleine’s story exactly – but instead of 12 little girls in two straight lines, you’ll find 12 ugly monsters in two crooked lines. It’s rather comical, what the authors (Bemonster is really Rick Walton & Nathan Hale) have done with the book.
It’s not a horror story, it’s not gory (really), it’s just funny – especially the ending.
Recommended for ages 5 – 9, if they’ve read Madeleine first. Younger ages might enjoy it – but I’ll leave that decision to their parents.
