Nicholas Young was tired of his life in England. He hated school (for good reason – made me shudder!) & when he ran away, his father apprenticed him to a butcher. Even worse than school, if you could believe it.
So Nick stowed away on a ship. But not just any ship – the HMS Endeavour, captained by the famous James Cook.
Because Nicholas had some learning, he was able to keep a diary of his journey – all the boring days, intermixed with the exciting, dangerous and sad ones.
Stowaway by Karen Hesse is engaging and exciting, even though many of the days aboard ship are monotonous and dull. Nicholas makes friends and enemies, learns new skills and grows into himself over the course of the three year journey.
Highly recommended for ages 10 & up.
