Halima and Atiyah were pledged to each other at birth. Growing up together allowed their love to grow as their tribe traveled the desert.
Then Atiyah is torn from his tribe and Halima to study at the great university in Fez. He misses the freedom and challenges of life in the desert, and he misses Halima.
Meanwhile, Halima loses her way in a sandstorm and ends up with a rival tribe, one which does not respect the customs of the desert as it should. The chief decides he needs to marry Halima, despite the fact she’s pledged to another man.
Her only hope is that Atiyah can find her in time.
I highly recommend the beautiful love story The Beduin’s Gazelle by Frances Temple for ages 12 and up.
