Mary on Horseback

This small, short book carries in it the power to bring tears to your eyes.

Mary on Horseback: Three Mountain Stories by Rosemary Wells tells the story of three people whose lives were changes forever by the life and work of Mary Breckinridge.

Breckinridge trained as a nurse during World War I, served in France, then came back to the United States to serve the isolated families in the mountains of Kentucky.

Wells tells the stories in Mary on Horseback not from Mary’s perspective, but from the perspective of John Hawkins, Maggie Ireland from Scotland and Pearl.  The stories are short, but poignant – I still feel a bit teary about the hard life these mountain people lived and how beautifully Mary served them.

Children of all ages will enjoy these stories – and gain a new appreciation for the privileges they enjoy.
