For those who enjoy Alexander McCall Smith’s The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, he has now written a story for younger readers.
The Great Cake Mystery tells readers of Precious Ramotswe’s first case as a detective – when she was in elementary school.
Her classmates are missing sweets – cake, bread with strawberry jam. Iced buns are missing from the school kitchen. Her friends target Poloko, a heavy-set classmate who loves sweets.
Precious feels sorry for Poloko, and decides to help him clear his name. The questions are: how can she do that? And, who is really stealing the treats?
The Great Cake Mystery is a sweet (pardon the pun) mystery, perfect for readers ready for a bit longer chapter books. Iain MacIntosh illustrates the book with block-print style drawings, bringing the flavor of Africa to the book.
Recommended for ages 6 and up – depending upon reading level. Children as young as four or five will enjoy having it read to them.
