The Wednesday Surprise

The Wednesday Surprise by Eve Bunting is a surprise – at least it surprised me.

It tells the story of Anna and her Grandmother, who comes on Wednesdays to stay with her while her mother works late and her older brother goes to basketball practice.

The two of them are working on a surprise for Anna’s dad, for his birthday. Anna’s dad is a truck driver, so he’s gone during the week.

Throughout the book, Bunting gives hints that the surprise has something to do with reading… Is Anna learning to read? Will she read some books to her dad to surprise him?

I recommend this sweet story for ages 3 through 9.
