The Third Gift

How many times have you heard the Christmas story, and the gifts of the wise men from the East?  How many times have you wondered, “what exactly is myrrh?”

The Third Gift by Linda Sue Park is beautifully illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline, and tells the story of a young boy who is learning his father’s craft.  Together they look for trees ready to release their valuable resin, which resembles pearls, or tears.

The boy finds an unusual tear, and gathers it.  He and his father take it to the marketplace and encounter some wealthy wise men on a long journey.

Park’s story will help children and parents alike what myrrh is, and her author’s note at the end will explain what the story does not.

Highly recommended for ages 3 and up.
