If your child is like mine, and an unashamed Civil War buff, he will enjoy reading Tillie Pierce by Tanya Anderson.
Tillie grew up in Gettysburg and was there during the entire battle. Her home was downtown, but her parents wanted her to escape the worse of the fighting, so she went to a friend’s farm. Unfortunately, her friend’s farm was at the base of Little Round Top and Big Round Top – just behind the Union lines.
So Tillie ended up nursing wounded soldiers – and lots of them. She was also separated from her family for the entire three-day battle – even longer because of the rain and poor condition of the roads.
Tillie Pierce is an interesting story, with lots of sidebars detailing events and places throughout. A real Civil War buff can skip most of them; but those new to the topic will find them helpful for giving background to the Civil War.
Recommended for ages 10 and up.
I’ve recently become a little obsessed with middle grade and YA nonfiction- for my daughter but also, me! I hadn’t come across this one yet but am excited for it. Thanks for posting!
