I have picked up Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce several times in the library – and then put it down again. I wasn’t sure I would be interested.
But when I heard Batty mention it as one of her favorite books while rellistening to The Penderwicks in Spring, I immediately picked up the audiobook.
I was not disappointed.
Liam is 12. But most of the world thinks he’s a grown-up. He’s gotten away with lots of things – almost driving a Porche once with his friend Florida. Fortunately, his dad showed up before he actually got started.
One day he gets a strange call, inviting him to be the best dad in the world. He tries to talk his own father into following the directions on the call, but his dad is convinced it’s a scam.
Liam decides that since the rest of the world thinks he’s a grown-up, he will act like one. He convinces Florida to play his daughter…. and talks himself into a super secret space flight.
I really enjoyed this book. Kirby Heyborne narrates the audiobook, and he’s a master at capturing the 12-year-old playing an adult. The situations Liam gets himself in are rather hilarious, and serious too. Fortunately all comes out all right in the end.
Highly recommended for ages 8 and up.
